My favorite place is…

Anywhere the four Parkers can get together in the same place these days. My daughter is away at university so whenever she can meet up with my wife, my son, and me – that is my favorite place…wherever that is. Our last trip together was to Zion National Park and this is a picture of The Narrows hike, which is amazing. And cold.

  1. Origins: When you’re born in Texas, you’ll always consider yourself a Texan. But I moved to Northern California in high school 30+ years ago, went to university, and married a Cali girl – so I’m more Californian than Texan at this point. We’ve lived in the San Diego area for the last 15+ years and consider ourselves San Diegans now.
  2. Sport: I love football. Growing up in Texas, football and church are the two required community activities everyone participates in, and I am still to this day a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. But my heart truly belongs to basketball; I played, I coached, and am the parent of a player (my son). It’s a beautiful sport, and when a group of players is working together in a trance-like flow state it’s a fun thing; it doesn’t happen in every game, but when it does it can be an almost spiritual experience.
  3. Food:  I consider myself a bit of a foodie. It is my favorite hobby because you get to eat the results! Barbeque was a food group where I grew up, and I love to smoke meat. My favorite is brisket when I have the time, but I’ll throw a couple of whole chickens on the smoker once a month or so, trying different rubs and always trying to get that skin just right. I also have a wood-fired pizza oven in the backyard and we’ll have friends, family, or both over for pizza parties where we try out all kinds of different pies. Needless to say, Thanksgiving is our Super Bowl each year because we always try out something new to add to the usual mix of dishes
  4. Favorite / most used emoji:  It’s two together. The open-faced smiley combined with the thumbs up:  😃👍  It’s basically my signature emoji
  5. If you could have coffee with anyone in the world, who would it be? My younger self. I would tell that guy to make some changes in his life, to stop wasting so much precious time with frivolous things, and to work a little harder.

My favorite place is…

Watching a sunset. I am transfixed by the beauty and love that it causes me to slow down to take it in. Living far away from family and friends, I find magic in knowing that we all watch the same sunset (even if theirs is a few hours later). It makes me feel connected.
